Local SEO Basics for Small Businesses: A Plain-English Guide

You do not need an agency to show up when people nearby search for what you do. These are the local search basics every small business can handle itself.

Local SEO Basics for Small Businesses

When someone searches for "plumber near me" or "coffee shop downtown," search engines try to show businesses that are relevant, nearby, and trustworthy. Local SEO (search engine optimization) is simply the work of making it clear to search engines, and to people, what your business does, where it is, and why it is worth choosing.

The good news is that most of it is not technical. It is about accurate information, kept consistent, in the places people look. Here are the basics, roughly in order of importance.

1. Get your name, address and phone consistent everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number, often shortened to NAP, should be exactly the same everywhere your business appears online: your website, map listings, directories, social profiles and review sites.

Small differences add up. "Suite 200" in one place and "#200" in another, an old phone number on a forgotten profile, or a former business name on a directory listing can make it harder for search engines to be confident all of those listings are the same business. They also confuse customers.

What to do:

  • Decide on one official version of your name, address and phone, and write it down.
  • Use your real business name. Do not stuff extra keywords into it (for example, adding "Best Plumber in [Your City]" after your name); most platforms prohibit it.
  • Search for your business name and old phone numbers to find outdated listings, then claim and update them.
  • If you move or change numbers, update every listing you know of the same week.

2. Choose the right categories

Categories tell platforms what kind of business you are. They are one of the strongest signals for which searches you show up in.

  • Pick the most specific category that describes your main business. "Dental Clinic" is better than a generic "Healthcare" when that is what you are.
  • Add secondary categories only for services you actually provide and want more of.
  • Avoid categories that are only loosely related. They can attract the wrong customers.

3. Complete every field on your listings

An incomplete listing gives search engines and customers less to work with. On each important listing, fill in:

  • Hours, including holiday hours and whether you offer emergency service.
  • Website address.
  • A clear description of what you do and where (see our guide to writing a business description that gets calls).
  • Services or products, if the platform supports them.
  • Service area if you travel to customers.
  • Photos.

Directory listings like ours count here too. A complete, claimed listing with accurate details is one more consistent, trustworthy reference to your business, and it is another place a customer may find you directly.

4. Add real photos

Photos help customers decide and help them recognize your location when they arrive. Upload your storefront or vehicle, your team, your workspace, and examples of your work. Real photos beat stock images every time. We go deeper in listing photos that get more calls.

5. Earn reviews steadily, and reply to them

Reviews influence both customers and local search results. What tends to matter:

  • A steady flow of new reviews, not a burst once a year.
  • Detail: reviews that mention the service and location are more useful to readers.
  • Your replies: responding shows you are active and care about customers.

Never buy reviews or offer incentives for them. Our guide on getting more customer reviews covers the honest approach.

6. Make your website local

You do not need a complicated website, but it should make your location and services obvious:

  • Put your name, address and phone in the footer of every page, matching your listings.
  • Mention the city or neighborhoods you serve in plain language on your home and service pages.
  • Create a page for each main service, explaining what it involves.
  • If you have several locations, give each one its own page with its own address, hours and phone.
  • Make sure the site works well on phones. Many local searches happen on mobile, often by someone who wants to call right away.
  • Make your phone number tappable on mobile.

7. Keep your information fresh

Local search rewards businesses that look active and accurate. Build a small habit:

  • Update hours before every holiday.
  • Add a few new photos every season.
  • Reply to new reviews each week.
  • Check your main listings every few months for edits you did not make.

What not to do

  • Do not create listings at addresses where you do not actually operate, such as a virtual office or a P.O. box, to appear in more cities. Most platforms prohibit it.
  • Do not create duplicate listings for the same location.
  • Do not stuff city names and keywords into every sentence. Write for people.
  • Do not chase every directory on the internet. A handful of accurate, relevant listings beats hundreds of neglected ones.

A one-hour local SEO checklist

  1. Write down your official name, address and phone.
  2. Search for your business and list every profile you find.
  3. Claim the ones you do not control yet.
  4. Fix any inconsistent details.
  5. Choose accurate primary and secondary categories.
  6. Fill in hours, website and description.
  7. Upload a few real photos.
  8. Reply to your last ten reviews.

Start with your listing here

If your business is already in the directory, find it and claim it to make sure every detail is right. If not, add your business for free. Our page for business owners has more on what a complete listing includes.
