Maintenance and tune ups for garage doors is recommended by the manufacturers yearly. This inspection should include inspection of the drums and cables. The drums and cables are important as they provide the lift while the spring(s) are the counterbalance. When the springs are inspected, we are looking for fraying, rusting and oxidation of the wires. If these are present, we recommend replacing the cables. If a cable breaks it will cause a door off track and could damage other parts of the garage door system. When inspecting the drums, we are looking for cracks in the drums or wearing down of the cable grooves in the drums.
