Addiction to alcohol or drugs is a chronic disease, and a serious one, which is characterized by not only physical symptoms but emotional and psychological symptoms as well. Substance dependence can have a devastating effect on one’s professional life, social life, and family. For many of our patients, getting clean on their own isn’t so difficult. The real challenge lies in avoiding a relapse. At the beginning of their addiction, their use of drugs or alcohol might have been over-indulgent or too frequent. However, with prolonged exposure to substance abuse, patients can alter the chemical balance in their brains and bodies, leading to a spiral of addiction, which is almost impossible to escape without expert support.
